Jakarta – The month-long lockdown remains unable to significantly curb new infections of Covid-19 with daily figures beating the pre-lockdown level.

Indonesia recorded 35,764 new cases on Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3,568,331, according to Health Ministry data.

A further 1,739 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours to take the total death toll to 102,375.

The daily death toll has exceeded 1,500 since July 27, when the country saw a record 2,069 Covid deaths in a single day.

There are a total of 518,310 active cases in the archipelago, mostly in the most populated island of Java.

Newly cases began to surge dramatically in late June, prompting the government to reimpose social activity restrictions, locally abbreviated as PPKM, across stricken provinces in Java and Bali on July 3.

The restrictions have since been extended twice to expire this weekend.

While current figures are still higher than the pre-lockdown level, they do show a downward trend compared to the worst period in mid-July where more than 50,000 cases were recorded in a day.

However, there have been more Covid-19 deaths in the last two weeks than at any point in the pandemic. The last time Indonesia reported fewer than 1,000 Covid deaths in a day was on June 15.

More than 22 million Indonesian citizens have received double doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, out of 71 million doses administered as of Thursday.

Daily vaccination numbers fell below 600,000, a major setback from President Joko Widodo's instruction to ramp up the shots to 2 million per day starting this month.
