Jakarta – The police in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, have named a local police officer a suspect for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl who had violated traffic rules.
Pontianak Police chief Sr. Comr. Komarudin said the physical examination results showed evidence of sexual intercourse.
"The suspect has been charged under Law No.23/2002 on child protection, which carries a 15-year sentence," Komarudin said on Monday as reported by Tribunnews.com.
The officer, identified only as DY, will also undergo a code of ethics hearing and faces permanent dismissal.
Komarudin explained that the alleged incident took place last Tuesday.
The victim was riding a motorcycle with her friend on Jl. Imam Bonjol-Tanjungpura, when DY issued them tickets for underage driving. DY then allegedly asked the victim to come with him saying that he would take her to a nearby police station.
However, Komarudin alleged that instead of taking her to a police station, DY took the girl to a hotel and raped her.
After finding out about the incident, the victim's parents reported DY to the Pontianak Police.
DY has been detained at the Pontianak Police headquarters. A preliminary investigation suggests that DY violated procedures as he was not on duty when the incident took place, Komarudin said.
He added that he promised to investigate the case thoroughly.
"We're investigating this case very seriously. Because if the suspect is found guilty, this case could damage our current efforts to increase police professionalism," Komarudin added. (nal)
