Jakarta Globe - August 1, 2020

Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Central Java surpassed South Sulawesi to join the top three provinces with the most cases of coronavirus on Saturday, while Jakarta is closing in on East Java at the top.

This latest development suggests a complicated situation in Indonesia's fight against the virus – provinces hit badly by the outbreak early on continue to struggle until today, while others have emerged as new hotspots. It also provides a grim outlook that the country's outbreak remains nowhere near its peak.

Central Java has been struggling to take the outbreak under control since cases began to surge in mid-June. It now has a total of 9,659 cases, including 637 deaths.

The death toll in Central Java has more than doubled since July 1.

South Sulawesi has recorded 9,552 cases, including 321 deaths, as of Saturday. The crisis is far from over in the province, with daily cases mostly hitting a three-digit figure.

For the eighth day in a row, Jakarta led the daily national count with 368 new cases, taking its total to 21,767, including 843 deaths.

The number of new infections in the capital city has outpaced East Java throughout July and the trend looks set to continue this month.

With 22,324 cases and 1,719 Covid-19 deaths, East Java remains to bear the brunt of the pandemic.

While Jakarta has recorded a faster speed in transmission rate since the beginning of July, cases in East Java have not slowed either, averaging 318 per day.

To make things worse, North Sumatra has seen a drastic surge in cases since last month. The province had only around 400 cases in the end of May and reported 1,500 on June 30. It now has nearly 4,000 cases to rank sixth among provinces with the most Covid-19 cases.

Daily cases have been highly fluctuating countrywide. Southeast Asia's biggest country has recorded 1,560 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 109,936.

Only 24 countries in the world have surpassed the sad milestone of 100,000 coronavirus cases.

Saturday's figure was the lowest in five days and a drastic drop from 2,040 cases a day earlier.

The country reported 62 more Covid-19 deaths to take its total death toll to 5,193, or 4.7 percent of the total cases.

More than 2,000 Covid-19 patients have been cured or discharged from hospitals in the 24-hour period, bringing the total number of recoveries to 67,919.

Indonesia still has to deal with 36,824 active cases in all 34 provinces.
