Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients in Indonesia increased by a record 1,190 on Saturday to a total of 34,719, or 46.9 percent of the overall confirmed cases, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force.
But daily deaths from the disease have topped 50 over the last eight days, including 66 fatalities today, bringing the total death toll to 3,535.
Total confirmed cases of coronavirus stood at 74,018, an increase by 1,671 from a day earlier. Since the beginning of the month, daily confirmed cases have been averaging 1,603.
Worst-hit East Java continued to add pace on the country's transmission rate, with 409 new cases to take its total to 16,140. It also reported 36 more deaths to a total of 1,188, more than any other province.
Jakarta, who has seen a resurgence since it relaxed restrictions last month, had 378 more cases to bring the capital city's total to 14,113.
After zero deaths in the previous day, Jakarta's Covid-19 death increased by 10 to 681.
South Sulawesi added 180 more cases to a total of 6,800, and eight more Covid-19 deaths to bring its total death toll to 217.
Central Java was the last province to report a three-digit daily rise with 100 more to a total of 5,403. That includes 235 deaths, the same as yesterday.
Coronavirus cases in West Java topped 5,000 for the first time after it reported 73 new cases, taking its total to 5,027.
Hotspots
Cases in new hotspots like North Sumatra, North Sulawesi and South Kalimantan grew by 67 or more in the day.
South Kalimantan is the most severely affected province after South Sulawesi outside the most densely populated island of Java, with a total of 4,069 cases and 211 deaths.
Apart from the top five, only four provinces have more than 2,000 cases each, including Bali, South Sumatra, North Sumatra and Papua.
Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra Island, was the least affected among the country's 34 provinces with just 99 cases and three deaths.
The National Covid-19 Task Force said 460 of all 514 cities and districts have been affected by the outbreak.
Southeast Asia's biggest country now has 35,764 active cases, accounting for 48.3 percent of total cases.
