Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Confirmed cases of coronavirus infections in Indonesia soared by 1,624 on Thursday, the highest single-day rise since the outbreak, to take the country's total to 59,394 in a gloomy start of the month.

The new high came a day after daily cases equaled the previous record of 1,385 and after nearly 30,000 more cases were added throughout the month of June. In the last ten consecutive days, daily cases have surpassed 1,000.

Globally, Indonesia ranks 28th among countries with the most cases and is only six spots behind China, where the outbreak originated.

The National Covid-19 Task Force said 53 more people have died from the respiratory disease in the 24-hour period, bringing the total death toll to 2,987.

On a more positive note, the number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients set a new record of 1,072, taking the total recoveries to 26,667.

Infections are not slowing in worst-hit provinces like East Java, Jakarta and South Sulawesi – all saw a three-digit rise in the day.

East Java suffered the biggest number of infections, with 374 new cases to bring the total number of cases to 12,695.

Jakarta now has 11,823 cases, 190 more from yesterday. South Sulawesi reported 165 more cases to take the province's total to 5,379.

Combined cases from the three provinces account for 50 percent of the national tally.

New hotspot Central Java, which has seen a surge in cases since mid-June, registered 153 new cases to take its total to 4,159.

The resort island of Bali experienced a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases, with 113 infections on Thursday. Bali has a total of 1,640 cases that put it among the ten most-affected provinces.

The rate of transmission varied significantly among the country's 34 provinces, half of them reported single-digit cases or none on Thursday.
