Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – It's been the toughest week in the Indonesian coronavirus outbreak with the most confirmed cases and deaths by seven-day average since first cases were detected early in March.

As of Saturday, the country has 45,029 confirmed cases, including 2,429 deaths and 17,883 recovered patients.

Daily confirmed cases averaged 1,087 during the last seven days, including a record 1,331 on Thursday. The total number of cases in the seven-day period made up 17 percent of the country's overall Covid-19 cases.

A total of 338 people have died from coronavirus-related diseases this week alone, accounting for 14 percent of the overall Covid-19 deaths. Two highest number of daily deaths also occurred this week.

East Java and South Sulawesi have become the new epicenter of the Indonesian outbreak since mid-May and remained unable to contain the spread of the virus.East Java recorded a total of 9,451 Covid-19 cases as of Saturday, 394 more from a day earlier. Only 378 cases separated between East Java and Jakarta, which has led the total tally since the outbreak. In early May, Jakarta has around 4,000 more cases than East Java.

But the capital city has registered a lot more recovered patients, meaning that East Java now has more active cases than Jakarta, 6,467 against 4,045.

While Jakarta seemed to have put the outbreak under control in late April, daily cases have mostly returned to three-digit figures since early this month. It saw 180 new cases on Saturday.

South Sulawesi registered 112 more cases to take the province's total to 3,685, the third highest number among the country's 34 provinces.
