Bisnis, Jakarta – The Indonesian Traffic Police Corps managed to stop 74,000 vehicles from crossing the borders of the Jakarta Metro Area for Idul Fitri mudik purposes. Most of the 74,000 cars were heading towards East Java and Sumatera.

The police forced the vehicles to turn back, preventing them from leaving the metro area to visit relatives in their hometowns, which is prohibited during the large-scale social restriction period.

Among the thousands of cars were 605 illegal travel agency cars seeking to "smuggle" homecomers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

These cars were taken by the police and the drivers were given tickets. "We took in 605 cars," Traffic Police Chief Insp. Gen. Istiono said on Monday, May 25.

Indonesia still bans Idul Fitri exodus for people residing in Greater Jakarta. The prohibition came directly from President Joko Widodo in an attempt to curb COVID-19 transmission, given Jakarta's high number of cases.
