Jaja Suteja, Jakarta – The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Indonesia increased by 479 on Monday – the lowest single-day rise since May 12 – to take the country's total to 22,750.

It followed another sharp decline on Sunday when daily cases were put at 526 – 44 percent lower than the previous day.

However, the downward trend in the past two days could be attributed to the Idul Fitri holidays, when many testing facilities were operating at less than full capacity.

National Covid-19 Task Force Achmad Yurianto said 240 more patients have recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of recoveries to 5,624.

"The number of confirmed Covid-19 patients who died during the past 24 hours was 19, so the death toll now totaled 1,391," Achmad said in his daily video briefing.

He said 78.8 percent of the country's 514 districts and cities have reported Covid-19 cases.

The task force has also tracked 49,361 people suspected of carrying the virus but not showing any symptoms (ODP) and 12,342 suspected patients in hospitals (PDP).

East Java, the new epicenter of the Indonesian outbreak, was again the province with the most number of new cases on Monday with 223, or 46.6 percent of all cases nationwide.

The figure was more than three times the province's 68 cases on Sunday. South Sumatra had 76 new cases on Monday, one more than Jakarta.

Sixteen of the country's 34 provinces didn't report any new cases during the second day of the national holiday.

Overall, Jakarta remains the hardest hit by the outbreak with 6,709 cases, followed by East Java (3,886), West Java (2,113), South Sulawesi (1,319) and Central Java (1,311).

This was the first time South Sulawesi overtook Central Java to be the fourth most affected province in the archipelago.
