Tara Marchelin – After a successful debut in 2019, a premium art fair organized by some of Indonesia's major art collectors, Art Moments Jakarta, will return this year on Apr. 17 to Apr. 19 at the Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel.
Khai Hori, the artistic director of Art Moments Jakarta 2020, said on Tuesday the fair will carry the official theme of "Yesterday Since Tomorrow," inspired by the concept of "moment."
"Yesterday Since Tomorrow means today. I was inspired by the concept of 'moment,' the present we're living in. Every moment in our life, every aspect of it, should always be imbued with art," he said in a press conference at the Sheraton Grand.
Khai also likens this year's art fair to time travel since visitors and prospective buyers will be exposed to contemporary, modern, or urban art and also art works created centuries ago.
A total of 50 art galleries will take part in Art Moments Jakarta 2020, half of them foreign galleries, including Whitestone Gallery from Japan, Art Agenda S.E.A. from Singapore and Aureo Gallery from Kuala Lumpur. One of the biggest local exhibitors will be the Lawangwangi Art Gallery from Bandung, Indonesia.
Leo Silitonga, the founder and director of Art Moments Jakarta, said the artworks will be exhibited in Hall A and Hall B of the hotel, and also Hall C in the Gandaria City Mall.
"We want to get more visitors in. We will not separate the artworks by genre so everyone can enjoy all the genres in the same hall," he said.
New programs
This year, Art Moments Jakarta has four new programs: Intimate Moments, Converse Moments, Prized Moments and Maker Moments.
Intimate Moments will take place in private rooms at the hotel and allow visitors to chat with the artists, such as Art Agenda S.E.A. and jewelry artist Seruni. The visitors will also be able to watch a performance by Indonesian performance artist Arahmaiani.
In Converse Moments, visitors can chat not only with the artists but also with other art professionals. Filmmaker Angga Dwimas Sasongko will give a lecture on film as moving images and Doctor Sophia Hage from Lentera Sintas Indonesia Foundation will talk about sexuality in sports and art.
"We also invite digital marketing professionals to talk about digital marketing for art. They will help young artists to promote their profiles and their artworks," Khai said.
Art Moments Jakarta 2020 will give a "Ribbon of Excellence" to five artists under thirty years of age from participating galleries in its Prized Moments section. This program has an aim to encourage artists to strive for excellence and seek the brightest new talents in contemporary art.
The Maker Moments section will feature workshops on customizing sneakers by Jakarta Sneaker Day's artists and painting conservation by Monica Gunawan, a professional conservator from the Art Restauro Laboratory. "In Indonesia, a lot of people collect paintings, but they don't know how to take care of them," Khai said.
Art Moments Jakarta will also highlight the works of Indonesian artist Mochtar Sarman, known for his mashup of futuristic and traditional art. This year he will present a new series of 3D paintings titled "Victory" made by industrial pop-style technique. Victory consisted of paintings of Napoleon Bonaparte, Lee Kwan Yew, Sultan Mahmed, Musashi and Alexander the Great in the artist's inimitable style.
"I want to present real-life heroes and leaders who can be an inspiration foe millennials. Paintings of these historical figures can be found in big museums around the world, but I make the Victory paintings in my own style. Napoleon in my painting wears a pair of Air Jordan One sneakers," Sarman said.
