Friski Riana, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi claimed that he did not order police apparatus to prohibit public demonstration on the day of the presidential inauguration on October 20, 2019.

"No [such an order]," said the President shortly after the meeting with the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) speakers at State Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, October 16.

He asserted that the practice of protests is assured by the constitution. However, should there is a ban, he asked the public to ask for the police's confirmation. "Demonstrations are guaranteed by the constitution."

The MPR speaker Bambang Soesatyo interrupted that the inauguration ceremony is the legislative body's agenda, and so his institution is determined to succeed in establishing the event and appealed to students to not staging a rally during the event.

"All Indonesians are called on to participate in maintaining a peaceful situation because the success of this event will show a positive message to the international eyes and so help boost our economy," Bambang remarked.

Previously, Jakarta Regional Military Commander Maj. Gen. Eko Margiyono announced that starting today, October 16, his side would not process any permit regarding students or public protests. The ban takes effect for demonstrations at the DPR-MPR building areas in Senayan, Jakarta.

Eko has been appointed to spearhead security measures during the presidential inauguration scheduled on October 20. Jakarta Police and the National Police Headquarters will also help secure the event.
