The treason trial of several West Papuan pro-independence activists is to be moved to Indonesia's East Kalimantan province.

The activists, who belong to the West Papua National Committee and United Liberation Movement for West Papua, were arrested during recent unrest in Papua.

Two executive members of the Committee, its chairman Agus Kossay and Steven Itlay, and the Liberation Movement's Buchtar Tabuni were arrested last month in Jayapura.

Suara Papua reports they are accused of treason and involvement in mass protests against racism in Papua and West Papua provinces since August.

Police said the trial, slated for December, is being moved from Papua to East Kalimantan for security reasons.

Indonesian-ruled West Papua has been gripped by weeks of protests and violent unrest which has left over 40 people dead, according to authorities.
