Jakarta – Ambon Mayor Richard Louhenapessy has declared a 14-day emergency following the magnitude-6.5 quake that struck the Maluku capital and two adjacent districts on Thursday.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Agus Wibowo said on Sunday that at least 30 people died and 156 were injured in the incident. About 700 buildings were damaged.
An estimated 250,000 people, 27,119 of them in Ambon, are currently living in several temporary shelters that have been established, including at Haulussy General Hospital and Tulehu General Hospital.
The emergency will end on Oct. 9.
