Erwin C Sihombing, Jakarta – The Jakarta Tax Office said Thursday that 20 Ferrari owners in the city have paid their luxury vehicle taxes, but warned that more than 1,400 luxury vehicles in the capital are still shirking payment.

"In the meantime, we do have fewer [unpaid luxury car taxes] because 20 Ferrari owners just paid theirs," Jakarta Tax Office head Faisal Syafruddin told reporters.

He didn't specify the total amount of the payment or the total number of the Italian marques in the capital.

According to data from the office, 1,461 luxury cars and motorcycles still owe the Jakarta government Rp 48.7 billion ($3.4 million) in unpaid taxes. Luxury vehicles are those with a minimum tag price of Rp 1 billion.

Faisal said he would continue pursuing luxury car and motorcycle owners to pay their vehicle taxes and promised stern measures for those who keep avoiding them.

"We will come to them door-to-door, conduct joint operations [with the police] and use warrant to collect payment," he said.

Earlier on Monday, Faisal said luxury car owners were specifically targeted because of the huge potential revenues – aside from the desire to enforce the law.

"A Lamborghini is levied a tax of almost Rp 150 million, a Rolls Royce almost Rp 1 billion, and a Ferrari almost Rp 200 million. Those are extraordinary numbers of taxes so we have to grab that potential," Faisal said.

Separately, tax office spokeswoman Hayatina said there are many other luxury cars with overdue tax in Jakarta, including 12 Aston Martins, 108 Land Rovers, 22 Lamborghinis and 166 BMWs.
