Jakarta – The Jakarta Police's traffic division has blocked 9,169 vehicle registration certificates (STNK) belonging to vehicle owners who had been caught by the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system and failed to pay their fine.

Traffic law enforcement unit head Comr. Muhammad Nasir said these were for violations committed from November last year to Aug. 27, kompas.com reported.

Out of the 9,169 vehicle owners, 997 have paid their fine and the traffic unit is currently working to reinstate their STNK, he added.

"Only some of the violators have paid their ticket and we urge the others to do the same immediately if they want to extend their STNK," Nasir said on Wednesday.

The ETLE ticketing system has been applied in Jakarta since November last year. However, it wasn't until July this year that 12 new cameras equipped with advanced features were installed at 10 locations across the capital.

The new cameras boast speed radars and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) capabilities and can capture the image of drivers who disregard traffic signs and traffic lights.

Additional check-point cameras were also used to detect violators of the odd-even license plate policy, seatbelt regulation, as well as those using their cellphone while driving.

Nasir added that 11,814 motorists had confirmed the violations recorded by ETLE cameras, 10,169 of whom had brought their cases to court. (syk)
