Bogor police urged to free mentally ill woman in blasphemy case

Imam Hamdi, Jakarta – Jakarta Legal Aid (LBH Jakarta) urged the police to stop the investigation and detention of woman SM who brought a dog to Al Munawaroh Mosque, Sentul, Bogor. SM was named a suspect in a blasphemy case.

LBH Jakarta director Arif Maulana demanded Bogor Resort Police issue the investigation termination letter (SP3) immediately. "There is no strong evidence to charge SM with articles on blasphemy," said Arif in a written statement, Wednesday, June 10.

SM was named suspect after she with her dog and shoes on entering the mosque on Sunday, June 30. Through a video that went viral on social media, SM verbally conflicted with people at the mosque.

Arief explained SM diagnosed with schizophrenia by psychiatrists team, and so the police should have released her. "SM who has mental disabilities has a right to justice and legal protection," he underlined.

Arief expressed hope the public could be cool-headed in responding to the case, wise, and open to the mental and psychiatric illness. "Including problems that SM dealing with," he added.

Bogor Resort Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Andy M. Dicky said that his decision to name SM as a suspect was right and in accordance with the procedure. "We can process the legal despite SM is said to be mentally ill. That can be proven in court," said Dicky on July 3.
