M Rosseno Aji, Jakarta – The Indonesian police have arrested Fitriadin, a man who allegedly spread the hoax about the attack inside a mosque in Petamburan during the May 22 riot. The police said that he posted the lie on a Facebook account under the user name Adi Bima.

According to police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo, Fitriadin posted a photo of a mosque in Sri Lanka, and made it seemed like it was in Indonesia.

Dedi said that the suspect admitted he did it on his own initiative, being a staunch supporter of one particular presidential candidate. Fitriadin also claimed that he was "emotionally triggered" by the protests-turned-riot on May 21 and 22.

Fitriadin was arrested at the gates of Jakarta's Lenteng Agung Toll Road on May 30. The police confiscated his phone and SIM card as evidence.

Fitriadin is charged with spreading false information to incite hate, which caused public unrest. He is facing a criminal punishment of up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of Rp1 billion at most.
