Jakarta (Koran Tempo) – The Indonesian Children's Protection Commission (KPAI) said there need to be harsher punishments for child abusers. The KPAI noted that cases of violence against children by family members are still quite high in Jakarta and surrounding areas.

In the past four months, there had been 12 cases of violence against children by family members in the Greater Jakarta Area. One case was the abuse of a 3-month-old baby by his biological father in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, which lead to the child's death.

KPAI deputy Rita Pranawati said that to cause deterrent effects, child abusers should be punished more severely than those who commit violence against adults. In accordance with the applicable law, said Rita, the punishment capacity should be raised by a third.

Harsher penalties, Rita added, should also be given to parents who commit violence against their children. "Because parents should protect children," she told Tempoyesterday, May 9.

According to KPAI's data, in 2018 there was a total of 877 cases of violence against children in Jakarta.
