Jakarta – South Jakartans are working hard to clear mud from their neighborhood after Friday's floods.

Community unit (RW) 08 in Pejaten Timur, Pasar Minggu, looks like a ship's wreckage, according to kompas.com, with thick mud covering many parts of the area on Monday. Many barefooted residents worked to clean the area, days after a flood from the overflowing Ciliwung River hit the area.

"We have been doing this since Saturday and it doesn't show any sign of ending. Every time we clear the area, the water's level rises again," Bolek, a resident clearing the site, told the news portal on Monday.

Despite being tired, he still had a herculean task ahead: cleaning his own house, which was inundated by mud.

"My house is on the riverbank and has yet to be cleaned because we focused on cleaning the road first. I can clean my house later," he said, adding that the flood had damaged many parts of his house, including the doors and walls.

The challenges have worsened for residents as the electricity supply was cut, but they have renewed hope after Fire and Rescue Agency officials came to their aid.

Floodwater has inundated 37 areas across the city, claimed two lives and affected more than 2,200 people. (fac)
