Antara, Jakarta – Transactions made through Indonesia's national QR code payment system, known as QRIS, more than doubled in the first half of 2026, underscoring the country's rapid shift toward cashless payments, Bank Indonesia said on Thursday.
The volume of QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) transactions reached 12.55 billion between January and June, up 100% from the same period a year earlier, Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta said at the Prima Executive Gathering 2026 in Bali.
The value of QRIS transactions climbed 89.52% year-on-year to Rp 600.69 trillion (about $33.5 billion), reflecting growing consumer adoption of smartphone-based digital payments.
"QRIS has become a gateway to the digital economy and a game changer for Indonesia's digital economy and financial system," Filianingsih said.
By the end of June, the payment system had around 66 million users and was accepted by 44.86 million merchants nationwide.
Bank Indonesia is targeting 70 million users, 47 million merchants, and 17 billion transactions by the end of 2026. With transaction volume already reaching 12.55 billion in the first six months, nearly three-quarters of the annual target has been achieved.
Launched by the central bank in 2019, QRIS standardizes QR code payments across banks and payment service providers, allowing consumers to pay using a single QR code regardless of the mobile banking or digital wallet application they use.
Before QRIS was introduced, merchants often had to display multiple QR codes from different payment providers.
The system has also expanded financial inclusion, particularly among micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), many of which previously lacked access to electronic payment infrastructure. A printed QR code now enables small businesses to accept payments from customers using a wide range of banks and digital wallets.
The QRIS ecosystem currently includes 96 banks, 60 non-bank financial institutions, and four payment switching operators, highlighting the growing interoperability of Indonesia's digital payments network.
