Arnoldus Kristianus, Jakarta – Indonesia's external debt edged up to $454.8 billion in July 2026 from $454.5 billion a month earlier, while increasing 4.9% year on year, Bank Indonesia said Tuesday.

The country's external debt was equivalent to 30.7% of gross domestic product (GDP), with long-term borrowing continuing to account for the majority of the total.

"The structure of Indonesia's external debt remains healthy, supported by the application of prudent management principles," Bank Indonesia Communications Department Head Ramdan Denny Prakoso said in a statement.

Ramdan said Indonesia would continue to optimize the role of external debt in financing development and supporting sustainable national economic growth.

Bank Indonesia said the increase was primarily influenced by inflows into international government securities, or SBN, which it said reflected continued investor confidence in Indonesia's economic outlook.

By economic sector, government external debt was used to support health and social services, which accounted for 22% of the total.

Government administration, defense and compulsory social security accounted for 20.7%, followed by education services at 16.2%, construction at 11.5%, and transportation and warehousing at 8.5%.

Private external debt contracts

Private-sector external debt, meanwhile, stood at $194.5 billion in July, contracting 1.2% year on year.

Private external debt was concentrated in four major sectors: manufacturing; financial and insurance services; electricity and gas; and mining and quarrying.

Together, those sectors accounted for 80.6% of total private external debt.
