Jayapura – Without any logical justification, a joint screening of the documentary film "Pesta Babi" (Pig Festival) followed by a discussion on the University of Mataram (Unram) campus on Thursday evening May 7 was forcibly broken up by Unram's campus authorities.

Supported by security forces, intelligence and campus security officers, the event, organised by several institutions such as Unram media, the Mataram Legal Aid Foundation (LBH), the Indonesian Student Union (SMI), the Unram Student Executive Council (BEM) and others, was unable to be continued.

Efforts at negotiations between the committee and several student organisation officials yielded no results and an argument ensued.

The campus authorities were unwilling to compromise and remained firm. The event was then forcibly broken up without any justification.

Participants were then forcibly removed from the Unram Student Activity Centre (PKM) building at around 8.50 pm local on the grounds that the event did not have a permit.

While being threatened harshly by the authorities, an Indonesian Military (TNI) member in camouflage uniform firmly declared, "This is Indonesia. There must be no separatist activity. Stop and disperse. Don't watch or discuss the film here".

Not only had students been enthusiastic about watching the documentary "Pesta Babi", but also hundreds of other members of the public. Deeply disappointed, they were forced to stop the event after receiving threats.

Notes

The film "Pesta Babi" chronicles the struggle of indigenous Papuans to defend their ancestral lands and forests from the threat of food security projects or food estates. The documentary also exposes the involvement of business circles, palm oil conglomerates and the Indonesian Military (TNI) in government backed national strategic projects (PSN). Additional photographs of the event being broken up taken by Unram alumnus Nyamuk Karunggu can be viewed from the link below.
