Fuad Iqbal Abdullah, Samarinda – Rudy Ma'ud issued a public apology on Monday after facing criticism over a Rp 25 billion ($1.5 million) budget for the renovation of the official governor's residence, including plans to purchase a massage chair and build a saltwater aquarium using regional government funds.
In a video statement posted on Instagram, Rudy said the renovation project would continue because it had already been approved by his predecessor. However, controversial items such as the massage chair and aquarium would instead be paid for with his personal funds.
"As governor, I understand the public's concerns whenever policies and public facilities are involved. Strong criticism reflects the public's care for the region that we all love," Rudy said.
He pledged to personally cover expenses unrelated to official government functions.
"I will not make excuses because this is my responsibility. I will personally bear the cost of renovation items beyond official needs, including the massage chair and saltwater aquarium," he said.
Last week, thousands of protesters gathered outside the governor's office in Samarinda, demanding an investigation into alleged corruption within the provincial administration and condemning what they described as wasteful public spending.
Rudy, a politician from Golkar Party, previously drew criticism after approving the purchase of an official Range Rover valued at Rp 8.5 billion. He later returned the vehicle to the seller following public backlash.
His family has built a strong political network in the resource-rich province. Family members have served as the speaker and member of the East Kalimantan regional legislature, mayor of Balikpapan, and former regent of Penajam Paser Utara, the area being developed as Indonesia's future national capital.
