Anastasya Lavenia Yudi, Jakarta – A study by the Center of Economic and Law Studies (Celios) revealed that the implementation of a wealth tax for the super-rich in Indonesia has the potential to contribute up to Rp142 trillion to the state's revenue annually. This finding was disclosed in Celios' Economic Disparity Report 2026.

"This is equivalent to 60 percent of the total income tax paid by all workers in Indonesia," said Celios' Director of Public Policy, Media Wahyudi Askar, during the report's launch at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. He mentioned that the wealth tax would only be applicable to individuals with assets amounting to Rp84 billion.

Media explained that the wealth tax differs from property tax. The wealth tax encompasses all assets owned by individuals, ranging from jewelry, bags, luxury yachts, private jets, to stocks.

According to the Celios report, the wealth of the 50 richest individuals in Indonesia is equivalent to the wealth of 55 million citizens. The report also revealed that during the period of 2019-2025, the wealth of the 50 richest individuals in Indonesia nearly doubled, from approximately Rp2,508 trillion to Rp4,651 trillion. The total assets of the 50 richest individuals surpass the State Budget (APBN) and are equivalent to one-fifth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

If the 50 richest individuals were subject to a 2 percent wealth tax, the potential tax revenue would reach Rp93 trillion. Meanwhile, if all super-rich individuals were subjected to a progressive tax rate of 1-2 percent, the potential revenue could reach Rp142 trillion.

According to Media, revenue from the wealth tax could be used to finance various public sectors. "It could be used to fund millions of jobs, millions of scholarships, public facilities, provide free commuter train services, and even offer free healthcare," he stated.
