Hendrik Yaputra, Jakarta – Yahya Cholil Staquf, Chair of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), urged the Indonesian government to utilize its presence and position on the Board of Peace (BoP) to end the war between Israel and the United States with Iran. Indonesia, Yahya said, must urge the United States, Israel, and all parties involved to pursue a peaceful resolution.
"The Indonesian government must utilize its presence and position on the BoP to urge the United States, Israel, and other actors involved to cease violence and pursue a peaceful resolution," Yahya said, as quoted in an official statement seen on NU Online, Monday, March 2, 2026.
The PBNU, Gus Yahya said, urged the government to play an active role in de-escalating the conflict toward a peaceful resolution. He stated that the role of peacemaking is a mandate of the Indonesian constitution.
Yahya also called on the international community to consolidate its efforts to re-establish consensus on the international order with the United Nations. He believes the UN must effectively fulfill its role as guardian of the international order.
Yahya also condemned the United States and Israel's attack on Iran. He argued that these brutal actions have further damaged the international order. In fact, it has the potential to trigger an uncontrolled global conflict. "And create a pretext for the resurgence of radicalism and extremism," said Yahya.
Yahya also expressed his deep condolences and sorrow for the death of Imam Ali Khamenei as a result of the attack. He invited all Muslims and the entire international community to pray for the Iranian people.
However, Yahya also expressed his regret for Iran's actions in attacking various countries without any acceptable reason. He believes the attacks have resulted in an escalation of the conflict, making resolution efforts even more difficult. "These attacks will only worsen the situation," he said.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on Saturday, February 28, 2026. US President Donald Trump announced that the attack killed Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran retaliated by launching a wave of missiles and drones at Israel and several military bases in the Middle East where US troops operate.
The conflict shows no signs of abating. As reported by the Daily Mail, March 2, 2026, Donald Trump revealed the possibility that war with Iran could last for the next four weeks.
