Septhia Ryanthie, Jakarta – East Timor Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao stated that the vision of former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, widely known as Jokowi, continues to extend to East Timor. Xanana made the remark following a meeting with Jokowi at his private residence in Sumber, Banjarsari District, Surakarta City, Central Java, on Friday, September 4, 2026.
Xanana noted that his discussions with Jokowi touched on various challenges and opportunities confronting both Indonesia and East Timor. Among the topics was the effort to create job opportunities for the younger generation and spur economic development in both nations.
"I have to thank President Joko Widodo for inviting me to Solo and to his residence. This was a very beneficial discussion," Xanana told reporters.
According to Xanana, the meeting demonstrated that the vision Jokowi cultivated during his presidency did not end with his tenure. He emphasized that this vision continues to transcend national borders, maintaining a focus on the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and East Timor.
"The vision he built when he was President of the Republic of Indonesia does not just stop, but continues beyond the borders to East Timor," Xanana said.
Xanana also expressed his appreciation to Jokowi, noting that the former president remains committed to a shared mission of ensuring no one is left behind. He added that ties between Indonesia and East Timor extend beyond formal intergovernmental cooperation to a lasting friendship.
"Thank you, Mr. President. You are in the hearts of the people of East Timor. This shows that this is a real statement," Xanana told Jokowi, who stood beside him.
Xanana emphasized that both countries have numerous opportunities for development, particularly for the youth. Therefore, economic collaboration and job creation were among topics discussed with Jokowi.
When asked by journalists about his expectations following the meeting, Xanana offered a brief reply. "Work! Work hard! Work hard!" he declared, drawing laughter from reporters and onlookers gathered outside Jokowi's residence.
Xanana also shared that this marked his first visit to Surakarta. Describing Surakarta as a charming city, he hinted at the possibility of future visits.
"May I return again and again and again? May I?" Xanana playfully asked the reporters.
Earlier in the encounter, Xanana lightened the atmosphere by distributing sweets to the media. As he handed out the treats, he humorously dubbed himself the "candy man." "Hold on, I am handing out candy! You know, I am the candy man!" Xanana said with a warm laugh.
