Jaya Takaliuang Bawole, Jakarta, Authorities in Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) Islands Regency in North Sulawesi have declared a hydrometeorological disaster emergency following flash floods on Monday that killed at least 14 people, with six others still missing.

Sitaro Regent Chyntia Ingrid Kalangit said Tuesday the emergency will remain in effect for 14 days, from Jan – 5 to Jan. 18.

She said the decision was taken due to the extensive impact of the hydrometeorological disaster across multiple areas of the regency and the urgent need for fast, coordinated response measures.

"This situation requires swift action by the local government to protect public safety and to reduce further disaster impacts," she said.

Flash floods swept through parts of the island regency following heavy rainfall, damaging homes, infrastructure and public facilities. Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate six residents who remain unaccounted for.

During the emergency period, the local government is authorized to take extraordinary measures under Indonesian disaster management regulations, including the mobilization of personnel, equipment and humanitarian assistance.

Funding related to emergency response and recovery will be drawn from the Sitaro regency's 2026 regional budget as well as Indonesia's national budget for the same fiscal year, according to the decree.
