Tempo.co, Jakarta – Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences for the massive flood disaster in the northern region of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, which has claimed hundreds of lives. The Sumatra floods have caused extensive damage in various areas.
"Accept our deepest condolences for the loss of lives and the extensive damage caused by the floods in the northern part of Sumatra Island," Putin said in a statement of condolences addressed to President Prabowo Subianto.
In a written statement from the Russian Presidential Office via the Russian Embassy in Jakarta as cited by Antara, Putin expressed Russia's sympathy for the Indonesian people who have lost their family members and relatives in the natural disaster.
The Russian government and its people also hope for the affected areas to swiftly recover from the disaster, and for the residents to return to a normal, safe, and prosperous life.
A number of cities and regencies in the Provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have been hit by flash floods and landslides since Tuesday, November 25, 2025, resulting in hundreds of casualties and the disruption of transportation, electricity supply, and communication channels.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported as of Saturday, November 29, 2025, that the death toll from the flash floods and landslides in the three affected provinces had reached 303, with 279 people declared missing, and 18 injured. Of the total fatalities, 166 were in North Sumatra, 90 in West Sumatra, and 47 in Aceh. Meanwhile, 133 people were still reported missing in North Sumatra, 85 in West Sumatra, and 51 in Aceh.
As of Saturday, a total of 11 helicopters belonging to the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) have been deployed to transport aid to the affected areas. Meanwhile, six warships (KRI) have also been dispatched to assist in the evacuation and aid delivery.
