Jakarta – Upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas recently highlighted the need for a collaboration with the Indonesian Armed Forces or TNI to meet the country's energy targets.
According to SKK Migas, security is key to making sure that cooperation contractors, also known as KKKS, can carry out their projects on time and at an efficient cost. It is also key to ensure industries and households across the archipelago have access to their energy supplies.
"The upstream oil and gas industry is at the forefront of national energy supply. Security in operational areas is not only an operational necessity, but can also be considered a strategic national necessity to meet national energy needs," said Anggono Mahendrawan, the head of the special task force for SKK Migas office in Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara area.
The upstream oil and gas industry is also a national vital asset, thus prompting the need to ramp up security.
The 2025 Law on TNI states that securing strategic national vital objects falls within the military's non-war duties. This makes TNI's involvement in the upstream oil and gas ecosystem a legal mandate, according to SKK Migas, while highlighting how collaboration has become increasingly relevant.
SKK Migas is also planning to pursue this collaboration through formal, measurable mechanisms and in accordance with regulations, while upholding professionalism, transparency, and the principles of good governance.
Synergy with all stakeholders, including also the police force, is key to safe and sustainable operations, as SKK Migas described the continuity energy supply as a "shared responsibility".
