Jakarta – President of the All-Indonesia Workers Union, Mirah Sumirat, expressed concern over the planned layoffs of hundreds of workers at the tire factory PT Michelin Indonesia. According to her, the protests in the factory stemmed from worry and anxiety over the threat of the loss of livelihood for thousands of workers' families amid a struggling economy.

Mirah maintained that layoffs should be a last resort, not a unilateral decision taken without open and just dialogue. According to her, multinational companies like Michelin should prioritize social and moral responsibility.

"Workers are not just numbers in efficiency reports, but individuals who have made a real contribution to the company's success," Mirah said in a written statement on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Mirah said her union urges the government, especially the Ministry of Manpower, to facilitate tripartite negotiations between company management, labor unions, and the government. She said this step is necessary for a constructive industrial relations solution in accordance with labor regulations.

Furthermore, Mirah emphasized that global corporations like Michelin need to respect the principle of the sustainability of the national workforce. She stated that Indonesia is not just a manufacturing site, but a home to millions of workers integral to the global supply chain.

"Maintaining job sustainability means maintaining economic stability and the welfare of the community. Do not let the decisions of global corporations disrupt the social order that has been built by the workers," Mirah said.

Behind every work uniform, Mirah added, a family awaits with hope. Do not let that hope fade due to unilateral decisions. "Let's stand together to ensure that justice and humanity remain the foundation of the employment world," she said.

Mirah hopes Michelin workers will push for fair solutions while fighting for their rights.
