M. Faiz Zaki, Jakarta – Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower recorded 10,880 workers affected by layoffs from January to August 2026, with February recording the highest number at 1,894 workers.
"Workers affected by layoffs due to resignation, retirement, permanent total disability, or death are not included in the calculation," according to data from the ministry's Satudata system for January-August 2026.
West Java recorded 4,626 layoffs in the first quarter, from January to March. The figure rose to 4,954 in the second quarter, from April to June, before reaching 1,168 in July and 132 in August.
Other provinces that recorded high numbers of layoffs over the eight-month period included Banten with 6,303 workers, East Java with 5,400, Central Java with 4,769, and Jakarta with 3,900.
Meanwhile, the provinces with the fewest recorded layoffs were Gorontalo with 47 workers, Maluku with 55, West Sulawesi with 71, North Maluku with 86, and East Nusa Tenggara with 96.
Overall, the number of workers affected by layoffs in Indonesia reached 53,490 during the eight-month period, according to the report. Satudata Kemnaker said the number of laid-off workers for each period was grouped based on the date of termination recorded in the Job Loss Insurance (JKP) application.
"Data in the JKP system may change at any time due to the addition, updating, or correction of data," the report said.
According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) West Java, the province absorbed 205,000 workers in February and May 2026. During the same period, however, the number of unemployed people in the province reached 1.79 million.
In terms of investment realization in 2026, the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming recorded Rp76.8 trillion (US$4.6 billion) in foreign direct investment (FDI) and domestic investment in West Java during the first quarter. The figure was higher than the Rp61.3 trillion recorded in the second quarter, bringing total investment in the province during the first half of the year to Rp138.1 trillion.
Last year, West Java recorded the highest investment realization in Indonesia, accounting for 15.4 percent of the national total. However, investment realization in the province during the first half of 2026 reached only 46.5 percent of the Rp296.8 trillion recorded throughout 2025.
