Roy Adriansyah, Jakarta – A massive fire swept through a densely populated neighborhood in Pengadegan Timur, Pancoran, South Jakarta, on Friday afternoon, leaving around 450 residents from 120 families homeless.

The blaze broke out in a cluster of rental homes and scrap collection stalls, reducing approximately 120 buildings to ashes. While there were no reported casualties or injuries, hundreds of residents have taken refuge in nearby mosques as local authorities prepare temporary shelters.

"The fire spread rapidly because most of the buildings were made from flammable materials. Narrow access routes also made it difficult for fire trucks to reach the scene," said Triyanto, Head of Operations at the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency.

Firefighters deployed multiple fire engines and dozens of personnel to control the blaze, which covered an estimated area of 1,000 square meters. The operation continued late into the evening before the fire was fully extinguished.

Local community leader Belly Bachtiar said the residents had little time to save their belongings as the flames spread quickly. "Most people managed only to escape with their lives. Many lost essential items, including their children's school supplies," he said.

Evacuees are now relying on assistance from volunteers and aid organizations, with urgent needs including clothing, blankets, food, and medicine.

One resident, Didin, said he fled with nothing but the clothes on his back. "We lost everything, including cash and school materials for my child who has exams soon. We really need help, especially for the children," he said.

The Pancoran Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. While initial reports suggest an electrical short circuit may have triggered the blaze, officials said the exact cause remains under investigation.
