Harumbi Prastya Hidayahningrum, Jakarta – Thousands of online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers are set to protest in Central Jakarta on Wednesday. The Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police will deploy 6,118 joint personnel from the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and the Jakarta administration to secure the rally.
Central Jakarta Police Chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro said the security measures aim to ensure the protesters can voice their aspirations peacefully. Officers will be stationed around the House of Representatives (DPR) building and the National Monument (Monas) to maintain order.
"Please feel free to express your opinions, but remain within the bounds of law and order. We are here to make sure everything proceeds safely and smoothly," Susatyo said.
He urged demonstrators to stay peaceful and avoid burning tires, damaging public facilities, or blocking roads. Traffic diversions will be situational, but residents are advised to steer clear of the DPR area and use alternative routes. Susatyo also reminded the public not to be provoked by hoaxes circulating on social media, stressing that officers will not be armed and will act professionally and humanely.
Garda Indonesia, one of the online motorcycle taxi drivers' associations, said the protest will focus on the Transportation Ministry and the DPR building.
The drivers are demanding a cap on app commissions at 10 percent, clear rules on delivery tariffs, and an audit of the 5 percent cut from their earnings. They also want harmful app features like multi-orders and paid memberships removed.
Other demands include replacing the transportation minister, adding the Online Transportation Bill to the national agenda, and a police investigation into the deaths of two drivers in Jakarta and Makassar during nationwide protests last month.
