Antara, Jakarta – Floodwaters submerged several areas in South and East Jakarta early Sunday following heavy overnight rainfall, particularly in the upstream region of Bogor, officials said.
According to Mohamad Yohan, Head of the Data and Information Center at the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), high-intensity rain caused water levels at the Katulampa Dam in Bogor to rise sharply, exceeding its capacity.
This situation led to an increased flow in several rivers running through Jakarta. Flooding began around 3 a.m., Yohan said in a statement.
At least 49 neighborhood units (rukun tetangga or RT) in South and East Jakarta were affected, all located along the Ciliwung River. Water levels in affected areas ranged from 90 centimeters to as high as 2.5 meters, BPBD data show.
Among the worst-hit neighborhoods were Kampung Melayu, Cawang, and Cililitan, where floodwaters exceeded 1.5 meters in depth. The flooding was attributed to a combination of intense local rainfall and overflowing rivers.
On Sunday morning, floodwaters were still reported in several parts of the capital, including Jalan Binawarga in Rawajati, South Jakarta, due to overflow from the Ciliwung River. In Pejaten Timur, floodwaters reportedly reached adult knee height.
Authorities at the Katulampa Dam had already raised the flood alert level on Saturday evening, warning of potential flooding in Jakarta in the early hours of Sunday after observing rising water levels.
