Melynda Dwi Puspita, Jakarta – The persisting waves of layoffs remain a source of anxiety among Indonesian workers. According to the Ministry of Manpower data, as many as 77,965 workers were laid off throughout 2024, up 20.21 percent compared to the same period in 2023 with 64,855 people.
Behind the phenomenon, the online employment website Jobstreet reported the top 10 permanent full-time job functions that suffered the most from layoffs last year. The data derives from the survey of 42 percent of 1,273 companies and human resource professionals who terminated their employees.
Through a report titled 'Rekrutment, Kompensasi, dan Tunjangan 2025' or 'Recruitment, Payment, and Benefits 2025,' Jobstreet said the top 5 jobs that experienced staff reductions in 2024 were slightly changed compared to 2023.
Administration and HR, accounting, marketing or branding, and manufacturing still occupy the top five positions, but there were more layoffs in management positions.
"Interestingly, many of these job functions are also the positions that were most recruited by companies in 2024," Jobstreet said in its report.
Administration and HR take the top spot of the full-time job function that suffered the most layoffs last year, at 29 percent. Meanwhile, management follows in second place with 22 percent, followed by accounting at 16 percent.
The following are the 10 types of jobs most affected by layoffs in Indonesia in 2024 according to Jobstreet:
- Administration and HR: 29 percent.
- Management: 22 percent.
- Accounting: 16 percent.
- Marketing: 15 percent.
- Manufacturing: 14 percent.
- Sales or business development: 12 percent.
- Corporate sales or business development: 11 percent.
- Information technology: 10 percent.
- Engineering: 10 percent.
- Legal industry or regulatory compliance: 8 percent.
