Timor-Leste has pledged humanitarian aid worth US$500,000 for Myanmar where a strong earthquake has left more than 3,000 dead, thousands more injured and tens of thousands displaced.

The aid promise comes despite the countries having strained diplomatic relations following the expulsion of Timorese diplomats from Myanmar following the Catholic-majority nation's strong criticism of the 2021 military coup and the toppling of the civilian government.

Timor-Leste's Council of Ministers approved the aid amount during a recent meeting, said a press release from the Office of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao dated April 2.

The government said the assistance will be channeled through the Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which coordinates disaster responses within the region.

Earlier, Gusmao also expressed his condolences to Myanmar's people.

"The government of Timor-Leste is deeply saddened by the loss of life and the widespread destruction caused by this earthquake in our neighboring country. With full hearts, we extend our solidarity and are ready to assist our friends in Myanmar during this incredibly difficult time," he said in a statement on March 29.

Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta sent a letter to Myanmar's National Unity Government in exile president, Lashi La, to expresses condolences for the loss of life and extended his heartfelt solidarity.

He also sent a letter to King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, offering his condolences for the impacts the earthquake had on Thai citizens.

"I express my profound sorrow for the victims of this tragedy," wrote Ramos-Horta. "We trust that under your leadership, the Thai people will face this challenge with strength and determination."

This is the second time Timor-Leste has offered aid to Myanmar following the US$500,000 sent after Cyclone Nargis devastated the country in 2009.
