Jakarta – Apileup at the Ciawi tollgate in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday night has left eight people dead, a Kompas TV journalist at Ciawi Regional General Hospital (RSUD) reported on Wednesday morning.

Bogor Police chief Sr. Comr. Eko Prasetyo said previously that the accident occurred when a truck heading to Jakarta lost control at the tollgate, hitting several vehicles waiting to pay their tolls.

Six vehicles were damaged, with three of them burned out.

"It's suspected that the truck experienced brake failure, and then hit a group of vehicles [in front of it]," Eko said, as reported by Antara.

Victims of the smash were rushed to Ciawi RSUD for treatment.

Many of the victims, including a customer service officer with Jasa Marga toll road operator, received severe injuries.

A doctor at the general hospital said that two less-severely injured victims had been sent home.

The Ciawi tollgate was temporarily closed following the accident, although it had partially reopened as of Wednesday.

The Transportation Ministry has extended its condolences to the families of victims through an official statement.

A team has been dispatched to the location to investigate the cause of the accident.

The ministry also reminded toll road users to be mindful of their safety and follow traffic regulations.

"Drivers must ensure their vehicles are in a proper condition before going on the road," said acting land transportation director general Ahmad Yani in the statement.
