Yvette Tanamal, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto posted on Tuesday a message of congratulations to Donald Trump for his inauguration as the United States president, and affirmed that Indonesia was eager to continue working with the US under the new Republican administration.
"My warmest congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump on his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States," Prabowo wrote on his X account (@prabowo).
"Indonesia remains committed to working closely with the United States and to reinforce our long-standing strategic cooperation for the mutual benefit of our two nations," he continued.
All eyes were on Washington as Trump, who won the Nov. 5 election by a landslide to defeat Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris, took the oath of office on Jan. 20 to kick-start his second term.
The inauguration ceremony, held indoors in the Capitol Rotunda, was attended by dozens of dignitaries as well as a slew of US business tycoons including tech magnates Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai, all of who were seated in the front row.
In his inauguration speech, Trump promised to begin what he called the "golden age of America" and hammered home his campaign pledges to increase tariffs on the US's international partners so "We will be a rich nation again".
According to sources at the Foreign Ministry, Prabowo is yet to plan a visit to Washington, though he has previously expressed his interest in meeting face-to-face with Trump.
In late November, during his visit to the US to meet with then-president Joe Biden, Prabowo made a personal call to Trump to congratulate him for winning the election.
"Wherever you are, I'm willing to fly to congratulate you personally, sir," he told the Republican president-elect, who was reportedly staying in Florida at the time.
"We'll do that, anytime you want," Trump replied.
The phone call was recorded and later posted to Prabowo's social media accounts.
