Jamal Abdun Nashr, Semarang – Hundreds of people staged a protest in front of the Central Java Regional Police Headquarters gate on Thursday evening, November 28, 2024.
The people crowded Pahlawan Street, Semarang City, closing one of the road's lanes.
They were protesting the fatal shooting of a vocational high school (SMK) student by a police officer. The shooting resulted in the death of GRO, a 17-year-old teenager from State Vocational High School 4 Semarang.
Representatives of the protesters from college students, school students, and local residents took turns delivering speeches.
Several banners were raised condemning the shooting by police. The protesters also wrote down their demands on the street using spray paint.
Meanwhile, the gate of the Central Java Regional Police was closed with officers standing guard in front of it.
Behind the gate, crowd dispersal vehicles were also on standby.
The demonstrators demanded justice for the shooting victim. "Justice must not disappear from Indonesia," said a student representative, Satrio Elvandio.
Protesters remained in front of the police station until dusk fell, with tension briefly rising but quickly abated.
