Hendrik Yaputra, Jakarta – President of the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) and the Labor Party, Said Iqbal, said that thousands of workers planned to stage a rally at the Constitutional Court (MK) on October 31, 2024, to protest against the Job Creation Law. The workers aim to influence the Court's decision on the material review of the law.
This lawsuit was filed by the Labor Party, KSPI, KSPSI AGN, KPBI, FSPMI, and several outsourced workers who were laid off.
"This decision is crucial for the future of Indonesian workers, as many provisions in the Job Creation Law are detrimental to workers," said Said Iqbal in his press release on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
He emphasized that KSPI and the Labor Party urge the Constitutional Court to uphold all the petitum submitted, especially regarding the revocation of articles that harm workers. These are related to low wages, lifetime outsourcing, simplified layoffs, reduced severance pay, and weakened labor protections.
They are also particularly concerned about the ease of layoffs, which can now be conducted through simple means like WhatsApp. "Layoffs can now be done via WhatsApp and approved by the Manpower Agency. This is a clear example of neoliberal policies that harm workers," he stressed.
The planned rally on October 31 is expected to draw thousands of workers from various industries, including automotive, electronics, pharmaceuticals, health, transportation, and garment. Similar rallies will be held simultaneously in different regions across Indonesia.
"We hope that the police will not block access at the Horse Statue. We just want to escort the decision of the MK and seek justice. This is a peaceful and constitutional rally," Said Iqbal said.
"We are seeking justice, why should there be barriers? We want the voice of workers to be heard, and this is our constitutional right," he concluded.
