Annisa Febiola, Jakarta – Jakarta gubernatorial candidate Ridwan Kamil aims to reduce Jakarta's air pollution in five years, if he is elected to lead. He said efforts to tackle pollution must be multidimensional.

"In five years, air pollution in Jakarta should be reduced," he said when met at Ganara Art Space, FX Sudirman, Central Jakarta on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

Ridwan Kamil stated that the initial attempt is to lessen communal mobilization or movement. He asserted that movement naturally produces pollution. And the same also applies the other way around.

In the next five years, Ridwan Kamil and Suswono plan to increase residential permits in the center of Jakarta and increase office permits other than in the central area. "So that southern people who live in the south will do shopping in the southern area (of Jakarta). That surely will reduce pollution," he said.

The second effort he offers is a short-term solution, namely increasing trees to reduce pollution. Ridwan Kamil-Suswono aims to triple the number of trees in the first years of his administration.

"Not just in the streets, but even on building rooftops. Policies in other countries dictate that rooftops should not only have mechanicals but also trees."

The third effort, said Ridwan Kamil, relates to minimizing the use of dirty coal energy sources that are not actually located in Jakarta. He promised to lobby the central government to convert and stop coal-fired power plants. "The authority is in the central government, but later as governor I will try to lobby them," he said.

This will be done in tandem with the expansion of the use of electric vehicles. "A combination of all (efforts), plus conversion to electric cars and electric vehicles. It's not easy, but we will do it," said Ridwan Kamil.
