Irsyan Hasyim, Jakarta – The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) updated its report on the number of evacuees from the flash flood disaster in Rua Village, Ternate City, North Maluku. Thus far, the number of evacuees has increased from 150 to 250 people.
"Or as many as 75 heads of families, (the evacuees) are concentrated in Vocational High School 4 Kastela," said the Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in a written statement on Friday, August 30, 2024.
A flash flood and thick mud inundated Rua Village after 2 consecutive days of heavy rainfall and killed at least 18 people.
According to Muhari, BNPB is still assisting the activities at emergency response posts. The team has started gathering data on houses and buildings in the landslide hazard zones or potential impact zones. The team also conducted mapping and spatial analysis to anticipate the risk of recurring floods.
"Relocation is placed at earthquake low-risk area and outside of the danger zones," said Muhari.
Until Thursday, August 29, joint personnel including members of the National Search and Rescue Agency reported one person remained missing. Piles of materials such as soil, mud, and rocks and heavy rain also hampered the search.
To optimize activities during the flash flood emergency period, regulators in Ternate City are accelerating the repair of supporting infrastructure. "Roads and bridges are critical to repair immediately, in addition to determining permanent housing locations," said Muhari.
