Zikrullah Shubhy, Depok – Members of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) staged a protest at the Depok mayor's office in West Java on Sunday by dumping dozens of sacks filled with household garbage, expressing their frustration with the city's inadequate waste management.
Three pickup trucks carrying the garbage arrived at the office of Mayor Mohammad Idris in the afternoon. Dressed in PDI-P's signature red shirts, the protesters unloaded the sacks and dumped them in the yard while security personnel looked on.
The protest comes in the wake of delayed trash collections across the city after the main landfill in Cipayung district collapsed due to overcapacity.
Ikravany Hilman, a PDI-P executive in Depok, described the situation as a waste management emergency.
"The landfill is closed following its collapse, leaving garbage scattered across Depok with no place to dispose of it. Today, we are symbolically entrusting this garbage to the city government," Ikravany said.
The Cipayung landfill is expected to reopen on Monday.
