Yustinus Patris Paat, Jakarta – The coalition of political parties that successfully nominated Prabowo Subianto for president has endorsed former West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil for the upcoming gubernatorial race in Jakarta, a senior politician announced on Monday.
The coalition comprises the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), the Golkar Party, the Democratic Party, and the National Mandate Party (PAN).
"The coalition has agreed to nominate Ridwan Kamil for the Jakarta gubernatorial election," said Gerindra acting chairman Sufmi Dasco Ahmad at the parliament building in Jakarta.
Ridwan's running mate will be announced in a few days, he added.
Dasco indicated that the Advanced Indonesia Coalition has welcomed new members who also support Ridwan's candidacy.
Ridwan is expected to challenge former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, who is currently seeking support from political parties to meet the threshold and put him on the ballot. He could fail to contest the election if more parties join the Prabowo coalition.
