Novali Panji Nugroho, Jakarta – Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with French President Emmanuel Macron during a working visit to Europe on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. The two leaders discussed a range of bilateral cooperation opportunities, with a particular focus on strengthening defense cooperation between Indonesia and France.
Warmly welcomed at the Elysee Palace, Prabowo expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended by the French head of state. He emphasized the longstanding and robust relationship between the two nations, particularly in the defense sector.
These include the modernization of defense equipment, the development of the defense industry, education and training programs, and joint dialogue forums. Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to deepening defense ties with France and exploring additional avenues for cooperation.
"We commend President Macron for his significant and active role in fostering strong bilateral relations between our two countries," Prabowo said in a written statement on Thursday, July 25. The Indonesian President-elect expressed optimism that Macron's capacity could further enhance cooperation with Indonesia.
In addition to defense matters, Prabowo and Macron exchanged views on pressing global security challenges. He also extended congratulations to France on hosting the 2024 Olympic Games, which will take place from July 24 to August 11.
"We are optimistic that these Games will be a resounding success, showcasing the exceptional talents of athletes from around the world," he said.
Prabowo pinned hopes that the Olympics would serve as a platform for unity and friendly competition among participating nations.
