Desty Luthfiani, Jakarta – At least 325 houses were inundated as floods hit Sidenreng Rappang Regency, South Sulawesi on Saturday, June 1 at around 21:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

Abdul Muhari, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency's (BNPB) Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, said the floodwater was about five to 30 centimeters high.

"The flooding was caused by moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds," Abdul said in a written statement on Sunday, June 2.

He said the thunderstorm caused trees to fall in the area of Jalan Poros Ponrangae, Jalan Emyselan, and Sidenreng Rappang Regency, and inundated residential areas and residents' rice fields.

"The data shows that 325 heads of families (KK) are affected and 140 hectares of rice fields are submerged. There are no casualties in this incident," Abdul added.

The affected areas include Sereang Village, Lautang Benteng Subdistrict, Rijang Pittu, Wala, Majellinf, and Lakessi in Maritengngae District. Sidenreng in Watang Sidenreng District and Ponrangae Village in Pitu Riawa District were also inundated.

"The BPBD (Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency) has taken action by collecting data on the affected areas, cleaning up fallen trees, and evacuating residents," he said.

Abdul confirmed that the floods were now gradually receding.
