Mita Amalia Hapsari, Jakarta – Prabowo Subianto could facilitate reconciliation between President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri, now that the intense rivalries of the recent elections have subsided, an aide of the president-elect suggested on Sunday.
Jokowi has distanced himself from the PDI-P since his son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, joined Prabowo as a running mate in the February election. The PDI-P nominated a different candidate and initially expected full support from both Jokowi and Gibran who in the past won elected public offices with the party's nomination.
The rift between the president's family and the governing party appears irreparable following Prabowo and Gibran's decisive victory.
Several PDI-P elites have confirmed that Jokowi and Gibran are no longer affiliated with the party, hinting at a potential opposition role in the future Prabowo government.
In contrast, Prabowo has consistently emphasized national unity and harmony among leaders as essential for his new government, scheduled for inauguration on October 20.
"Mr. Prabowo maintains friendships with both Mr. Jokowi and Madame Megawati, giving him the ability to facilitate communication between the two national figures," said Habiburokhman, deputy chairman of Prabowo's Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra).
While many doubt the likelihood of swift reconciliation between Jokowi and Megawati, Habib expressed confidence in Prabowo's potential to broker a breakthrough.
"The possibility of a meeting between Madame Megawati and Mr. Jokowi is within reach. We believe both figures are committed to the prosperity of the Indonesian people," the politician stated.
"They can offer significant contributions to the nation and provide valuable advice to the new government amid challenges. Ultimately, they will prioritize national interests over personal differences."
Prabowo has demonstrated a conciliatory approach since his election. For example, he has maintained communication with the Muslim-based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) despite opposition from within his coalition.
He has met with leaders of incumbent parties from rival coalitions, except for Megawati, since his confirmation as the election winner on March 20.
