Antara, Jakarta – Authorities in West Java closed the newly-built Bocimi toll road on Wednesday evening after a section of it collapsed following heavy rains.
Police said a car plunged into the large crater created by the collapse, injuring the driver and passengers. However, police didn't specify the number of people injured in the incident.
"A truck overturned while attempting to avoid the crater, and fortunately, the driver escaped without injury," said Sukabumi Police Chief Adjunct Chief Commissioner Tony Prasetyo at the scene.
The collapse occurred at around 8 p.m. at the 64th kilometer of the toll road connecting Bogor, Ciawi, and Sukabumi, which formed the acronym the toll road is named after.
Motorists heading to Sukabumi are advised to take non-highway routes as it cannot be immediately estimated how long the repair will take.
State-run construction company Waskita Karya, which built the toll road, has deployed a team to inspect the area and carry out emergency measures, including the temporary closure of the area for public safety, said Alex Siwu, the company's corporate secretary.
The toll road has been built in stages since 2018 with the latest part, including the collapsed section, inaugurated by President Joko Widodo last August.
