Antara, Jakarta – The General Election Commission (KPU) is gearing up to oversee simultaneous regional elections across Indonesia in November, spanning 37 provinces and 508 regencies/cities.

The KPU kickstarted the preparatory stages for these elections with an official ceremonial event held at the Prambanan Temple in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), on Sunday.

KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy'ari explained that the simultaneous regional elections in 2024 will only be held in 37 out of 38 provinces, as the Special Region of Yogyakarta does not conduct direct regional elections.

"For the gubernatorial elections, it will be held in 37 provinces, as Yogyakarta does not undergo direct regional elections," said Hasyim to reporters in the Prambanan Temple area, Sleman, Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta has a unique regulation as stipulated in Law Number 13 of 2012 concerning the Special Status of the Yogyakarta Special Region. Unlike most provinces where the governor and vice governor are elected through a direct vote in general elections, in Yogyakarta, the governor and vice governor are not elected. Instead, they are appointed through a traditional and ceremonial process involving the Sultan of Yogyakarta and local traditional leaders.

Out of 514 regencies/cities, only 508 will be holding the simultaneous regional elections in 2024. This is because there are six administrative regencies/cities in DKI Jakarta that do not conduct direct regional elections.

Furthermore, Hasyim emphasized that the voting for the simultaneous regional elections in 2024 will take place on Wednesday, November 27.

Here is the schedule for the stages of the 2024 Regional Elections:

• February 27-November 16, 2024: notification and registration of election monitors;
• April 24-May 31, 2024: submission of potential voter lists;
• May 5-August 19, 2024: fulfillment of requirements for independent candidate support;
• May 31-September 23, 2024: updating and compiling voter lists;
• August 24-26, 2024: announcement of candidate registrations;
• August 27-29, 2024: candidate registration;
• August 27-September 21, 2024: examination of candidate requirements;
• September 22, 2024: determination of candidate pairs;
• September 25-November 23, 2024: campaign period;
• November 27, 2024: voting day;
• November 27-December 16, 2024: vote counting and result recapitulation.
