Imam Suhartadi, Jakarta – Presidential Special Staff for Legal Affairs, Dini Purwono, confirms that Jakarta retains its status as the Special Capital Region (DKI) and it will remain the national capital until the President issues a decree for the relocation to Nusantara in East Kalimantan
"According to Article 39 of Law Number 3 of 2022 regarding the Capital City of the State (IKN), the legal status of Jakarta as the capital has not concluded," said Dini in Jakarta on Thursday.
Regarding the precise timing of the presidential decree, Dini mentioned that it is entirely dependent on the President's authority.
"Nusantara will only legally become the national capital when the presidential decree is issued," she explained.
The initial law designating Jakarta as the Capital City of the State lost its status on February 15, 2024, due to the enactment of the IKN Law on Feb. 15, 2022.
The development of the Nusantara capital is ongoing. The government has invested Rp 68.6 trillion ($4.4 billion) in office buildings, apartments, worship places, toll roads, and utilities in Nusantara. The construction of a toll road connecting Nusantara and the city of Balikpapan has reached 70 percent, while the construction of the future State Palace is half-completed.
Earlier this month, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo visited the construction site. He expressed the possibility of moving to the new national capital as early as July, pending the completion of crucial infrastructure projects.
The whole construction of the "smart and green" capital city is expected to be completed by 2045, which marks the country's centennial anniversary.
