Adil Al Hasan, Jakarta – The House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani responded to the request by civil society's request through Petisi 100 or Petition 100 to impeach President Joko Widodo or Jokowi for allegedly practicing nepotism in the Constitutional Court and intervening in the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

According to Puan, such an impeachment requires evidence that the president has indeed violated the law. However, she accepted the motion.

"Aspirations can be expressed, but what is the urgency? They're aspirations, so we accept them," Puan said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, January 16.

A number of figures, who joined the movement which they called Petisi 100 Penegak Daulat Rakyat (people who uphold the nation's sovereignty), urged the DPR and the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to immediately impeach President Jokowi.

This is in light of Jokowi's alleged constitutional violations, including nepotism in the Constitutional Court and interference in the Corruption Eradication Commission. Petisi 100 notes that there are ten grounds for Jokowi's impeachment, which they conveyed to the MPR in Senayan, Jakarta, on July 20, 2023.

"Impeachment has become increasingly relevant after the new constitutional violations committed by Jokowi," as written in the Petition 100 press release, Thursday, December 7, 2023.

One of the constitutional violations is Jokowi's involvement as the brother-in-law of former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Anwar Usman, in the issuance of decision No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023 on the presidential age limit. The decision cleared the way for Jokowi's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run for vice president in the upcoming February election.

The MK's Honorary Council later ruled that Anwar Usman had committed a serious breach of ethics and was dismissed as Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.

Petisi 100 found that the President had clearly violated Article 22 of Law No. 28 of 1999 which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison. "Based on this violation, Petisi 100 will immediately report the criminal acts committed by Jokowi, Anwar Usman, and Gibran," it said.

Among the figures involved in Petisi 100 include former Army chief of staff Gen. (ret.) Tyasno Sudarto, former MPR chairman Amien Rais, professor at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Zainal Arifin Mochtar, lecturer at UNS M. Taufiq, chairman of FUI DIY Syukri Fadholi, chairman of UGM's Student Executive Board (BEM) Gielbran M. Noor, and representative of Petisi 100 Marwan Batubara.
